Re: traffic on 164.1000 - Corona area
It was on a dual-band amateur mobile. I don't see a whole lot of intermod (at least anything intelligible)in the VHF fed band with this radio, believe it or not. That's why it struck me as out of the ordinary.....

traffic on 164.1000 - Corona area
Just heard one side of a conversation on 164.1000. The individual said he had poor cell coverage, but did say something to the effect that he was on cell phone check with Andrews. I have this as a NEST (Nuclear Emergency Search Team) freq, but that is old info. Comms were in analog and I couldn't ge...

Re: F.B.I
Try again, fellas! There is **plenty** of stuff in the clear. In fact, I listened to a few ops just last week. http://www.socalfedcom.blogspot.com has a good list. In their radios, encryption is selectable and not strapped. You will hear encrypted stuff sporadically, but more often than not, it's cl...

Re: New Radios System
I know from the fire side, no one wants to touch the voice side of the system with a 10 foot pole. Some of the reasoning is legit. The point is that CalFire said "no" to the system (voice side) before buildout even started. If they are out, you can count on everyone else being out with them.

Re: Riverside Fire Dept
That is very true, especially if you are anywhere near McKinley/Hidden Valley or down towards Cajalco/Eagle Glen areas. I believe that their main repeater site is on Box Springs, which has marginal coverage out this way.

Re: New Radios System
Seems like a bit of a rush to judgement (on the radio system, not the food)! We're talking about a radio system that covers hundreds of square miles, potentially thousands of users and areas of complex terrain. Not to mention all of the site acquisition issues early on and also the fact that there i...

Re: Medical helicopter freqs
To clarify, this is an excerpt from the Riverside EMS (REMS) protocol manual: The following are descriptions of the County and State licensed radio frequencies utilized within the Riverside County EMS System and their specified usage. 1. The Riverside County Information Systems, Radio Division is re...

Re: Medical helicopter freqs
More than likely you will not hear Mercy Air or Reach make contact with the hospital as contact is made by Paramedic personnel on the ground. The decision for air transport is made by on-scene personnel in conjunction with the hospital. All patient info is given to the base hospital prior to the pat...

Re: Short wave radio recommendation
I will second the SDR idea. I have an RTLSDR dongle ($20 on eBay) and an upconverter ($75) and it makes a pretty decent HF receiver for not a lot of money. The waterfall display showing a chunk of spectrum at a glance is great. I am probably going to pick up an afedri also, as I have read some excel...
