Best way to alpha tag Frequencies/TGID's?

This is the place to discuss Riverside County scanning related topics. Whether it be something about a particular agency, radios, antennas, or other general scanner related questions, you can talk about it here.

Best way to alpha tag Frequencies/TGID's?

Post by temfreqhunter »

How dop you guys program the alpha tags on you scanners. Thinking of giving my scanner a change for the alpha tags to possiby include more info. Maybe some suggestions for RSO/CDF RRU?

On most of my scanners I use plain English to keep things simple.

For example
Moreno Valley 7
Moreno Valley 8
RRU 1
RRU 2
Support 5
Support 6
AMR Med-Net 1
AMR Med-Net 2
Corona PD Disp
Corona PD Tac 1
Corona PD Tac 2
March ARB Tower
March ARB Ground
etc..

Each bank has a master tag that will give the agency/category name "Sheriff" "County Fire" "Police Depts" "Aviation" etc.

But on radios with limited display I will use a shorter display
7-MOVAL
8-MOVAL
AMR 1
AMR 2
COR PD DISP
COR PD TAC1
KRIV TWR
KRIV GND
etc.

Really depends on how many characters your scanner supports. Most of them are from 12-16 characters. I say name it however you want and makes things the easiest.

Well, if you ask me, I usually write whatever the patrol car/apparatus says.

For example, I will write something like "Indio Police" and "Indio Police Tac."

For RSO I used to use this method but did a makeover once to avoid confusion for example what I currently use Is:

Palm Desert Disp (short for dispatch)
Palm Desert Cars
Palm Desert Tac 1
Palm Desert Tac 2
Indio Dispatch
Indio Car-Car (fits surprisingly)
Indio Tactial 1
Indio Tactial 2

In some cases, it might be neccessary to abbreviate (i.e. use PD/FD instead of written out Police/Fire).

Another alternative is for cities such as Riverside or Palm Springs is to use what New York labels their departments. So for Riverside one could use RCPD for police tags and FDRC for fire department tags. Same goes for Palm Springs except of course replace RC with PS.

Some common abriviations I like to use:
Dis or Disp - Dispatch
PD - Police
FD - Fire
Ch. - Channel (i.e. PSPD Ch. 2)
Tac - Tactial
Cars/C-C Car/Car
Train - Training
Suprt - Support
RVC - Riverside County
Use abriviations for cities i.e. DHS = Desert Hot Springs, Cat City = Cathedral City

But like Brandon said, there is no right or wrong way to alpha tag. These are just some suggestions from me. So good luck and happy alpha tagging!

I use whatever the people using the channels say when they refer to the channel.

Hey! That's a thought! Maybe I should start doing that and it'll be easier to monitor!

So you probably write "Jurupa 2" since Jurupa Car/Car = Channel 2?

That way, I good variation on the Desert site would be:

Palm Desert 1
Palm Desert 2
Palm Desert 3
Palm Desert 4
Indio 5
Indio 6
Indio 7
Indio 8
Indio Jail 14
Jail Trans 15

Here in Seattle I use that method for Seattle/King County fire departments (i.e. King Cty. Fire 1).
