This is the place to discuss Riverside County scanning related topics. Whether it be something about a particular agency, radios, antennas, or other general scanner related questions, you can talk about it here.

RCPD Channel 3 encrypted?

Post by cvrules90 »

I read on Radio Reference that RCPD Channel 3 is occassionally encrypted. Was just afraid they were going to encrypt all their channels.

Maybe it is for special circumstances like a hold-up where someone might have a scanner.

Big Ed, supposedly RPD's encrypted channels are P25 digital AND encrypted, so If you don't have a digital scanner, I don't think you would hear anything, not positive though. I'll check it out on Ch 7.

I don't know what the purpose of having encryption on only Ch 3 and 7, seems like it should be all or nothing. CH 3 has traditionally been an alternate dispatch channel when CH 1 dedicated to an incident of some type, or as secondary dispatch when CH 1 gets too busy. I have not heard that happen recently, though, possibly MDC and cell phone usage has cut down on radio traffic. Maybe they have plans to re-assign the usage of the frequencies/channels so there is the option of an encrypted tac freq. Just a SWAG on my part...

Only when they want to. I still hear stuff on the occasion, mostly BS though.

Correct, some transmissions are encrypted using ADP software encryption. When RPD transitions fully to P25 they will be using DES-OFB (not confirmed - rumor only) on all channels. One of the current rumors is this will occur EOQ1. I've also heard another rumor they will be switching to PSEC. So, we're just going to have to wait and see.
