This forum is used for topics that specifically relate to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. This area was mostly for stuff about the old EDACS system, but new topics about RSO are also welcome.

Star 9

Do they have any EDACS talkgroups, or do they only use the VHF frequency in the AM band?

They don't have a specific TG, they can operate on any TG within the EDACS system. They also have the ability to comr up on VHF and UHF freqs to talk to surrounding agencies.

On VHF air they use 123.425. They usually refer to the channel name as BRAVO

I have heard various agencies' helicopters communication with each other such as Air 1 talking to Star 9, on 123.450 which they referred to as Bravo Sierra. Gee, I wonder what that stands for? =)

They probably would use EDACS or CLEMARS for mutual aid.

There is no EDACS talkgroup that is exclusively assigned to the helos like there is in San Diego and Orange County.

The VHF air to air they talk with Air 1, 40 King, etc.

RSO dispatch knows where Star 9 is at within the county, and if a mutual aid request comes in, they contact them on the local TG to see if they are available to assist. When RSO first got helos, the air units had a bad rep for never being available when needed, thus the nickname of "Hangar 80" back when they were called Star 80 & 81.

Only time I've ever heard any aviation traffic on CLEMARS was years ago, a US Customs aircraft "Omaha 19" talking to someone, couldn't hear the other side....Omaha indicates a CPB aircraft.

Doesn't Local TG mean that station's dispatch channel?

Thanks for the explanation.

Usually main dispatch, sometimes they are working an incident and are on a different TG, but dispatch knows which one they are on, that's their job.

Yup! And they can track it all at their workstation.
