Can you hear ERICA?

Post by radioprescott »

Looks like the Eastern Riverside County Interoperable Communications Authority may be up and rumning. A note in the RCS system meeting minutes indicates that the system was "up and running" in April of this year. Anybody hearing it yet?

From the April 2009 RCS minutes: "Dr. Henry Richter, Communications Consultant from Richter Group, whose office is based at Palm Springs, CA wanted to start a dialogue with the RCS. They are putting in a regional system in Coachella Valley, Indio, Cathedral City, Palm Springs, and Banning. He had an earlier conversation with Mr. Chris Hinshaw about an intertie to the RCS. Their system is up and running having 11 channels, 2 site-simulcasts plus one site multisite. It will be operational one year from now." The FCC data below appearantly indicates the same 5 freqs at 2 "sites", and one of those freqs as conventional repeaters at the other "multisites" at member cites.. Not sure where the other 6 freqs are, unless they are coming from the Palm Springs system when it is depreciated.

I was out there a couple weeks ago but did not pick up any ERICA P25 control channels when searching 851-869 MHz.
Hopefully somebody in the desert can do a quick search. I'm hoping to get back out there soon and follow up on this.

Here is an update on the ERICA system
Coachella Valley cities later this year will start moving over to a $20 million communications system designed to connect the desert's police departments.

The Eastern Riverside (County) Interoperable Communications Authority — known as ERICA — will put Beaumont and the valley police departments that do not contract with Riverside County Sheriff's Department on the same radio frequencies.
Officials are now in the final stages of installing the major equipment at five tower sites and at the police departments.

After a testing phase and training, cities will be cutting over from their current systems and joining ERICA. The first city — Palm Springs — should be online by the end of the year; the rest will be on the new system by April or May 2010, said Indio Police Capt. Richard Banasiak, executive director of the ERICA project.

As far as I know, all police forces are now on ERICA. Unfortunately, they're all encrypted. I thought of getting a digital scanner for the next time I go to the valley but now I see that I"ll be SOL. I guess they don't do any simulcasts because they wanna keep crooks out of the know (especially in Indio).

By the way, anybody know when the fire departments will cut over? Will they be encrypted too?
