Ham Radio as Scanner?

Post by workinwifdakids »

Good afternoon! Thank you for making this forum available.

I'm a recently-licensed HAM, and my first gear is en route: a Yaesu VX5R. Of course, I recently got addicted to listening to the sheriff's department on the online feed.

So, can anyone tell me: will my new transceiver let me monitor dispatch? That's not why I bought the radio, but it would be a neat addition in the evenings while I'm reading.

If you are referring to RSO, the answer is, not really. You could program in the trunked freqs, but it is like listening to them with an old, non-trunking scanner. It's almost impossible to follow a conversation, and you have to listen to a bunch of electronic sounds in between. Just get a trunking scanner, they're cheap enough these days.
