The Banning Police Department got a helping hand from the federal government in the way of two grants totaling $1million that will save jobs and help communications.

From the article:
The Police Department also secured a $300,000 technology grant that will pay for inter-agency handheld radios.

"Those radios will allow us to talk to other agencies," Purvis said. "Whether it be the (Riverside County) Sheriff's Department, or a new radio system that's being installed in the Coachella Valley.

"Not only would we be able to communicate in Banning, but we would be able to communicate with those two entities."

The radios are capable of encryption, which would prevent non-law enforcement personnel from listening in. Purvis called them "cutting edge" technology.

"We're very proud we're going to be able to buy these radios, and we're ready for the future," he said.
