All you have to do is use the limit search function on your scanner like I'm sure he did. A lot of the federal stuff is digital, so you need a digital scanner to listen in. The forestry/fire freqs you should still be able to hear though.

You need a digital scanner to hear most of the federal stuff. Also keep in mind they can use encryption too. I prefer the BCD996XT since it will do NACs and is controlled by ProScan for logging/recording. For road trips, I mainly use the Uniden HomePatrol-1 since it can log/record without the need of a computer hooked up. It also might be worth waiting for the new Unidens to come out later this year to see what they have to offer.

BIG ED, the digital scanner that I have is a Pro 96 that I got off of ebay, it was N.O.S. I think I paid around $200 for it a couple of years ago from some store in TX that had a bunch. I use Starrsoft software to program all my newer scanners. I got a Pro 95 when they first came out, and after one day of trying to program it by hand, I splurged on a cable, the program is free for the Pro 95, but it's $30 I think for the 96, well worth it I'd say. It works fine, and I don't have the bucks to splurge on anything newer, and really no reason to since a lot of stuff is going away.

pro95-96 are the same radio? what is the diff. software does all the programming cool man i will start looking at them. thanks guys. BIG ED

Big Ed, the Pro 95 was one of the first trunking radios, they are 10 or so years old, 1,000 channels. The Pro 96 is quite similar but it can receive digital P-25 transmissions as well as trunked systems, it was the first digital scanner by Radio Shack. They both can be programmed by using a computer and a special cable.

OK THE PRO-96 I NEED TO FIND. I GOT A PRO-94 OFF CRIAGS LIST FOR 30.00 BUCKS GOING TO START LOOKING. HOW OLD IS THE PRO-94 ANYWAY. THANKS GUYS. BIG ED

Pro 94 first came out in 2000. Does yours have a jack for computer programming on the side? If it does, it is a newer version. I still use my Pro 95, if you don't drop them in the toilet they last a good while.
