The fallback plan was EDACS. After a certain period of time that the new system is up and running, then the need for a fallback plan diminishes. Any future failures are dealt with, not rolled back to the old system being replaced. That only makes sense for the first couple of weeks after a cutover. Then, you've got to move on.

Given the level of planning and testing that took place on that system, if management decides to shut down EDACS and cancel any roll back contingency plans, it was probably a rational and sound decision. At least as rational and sound as it's reasonably possible to do.

I just hope their simplex frequencies won't become crypto.

Have been hearing sporadic traffic on the Central system this AM. TG 12-024, sounds like the school police again, talking about responding to Lot B for a 20002VC report.

Well there's a chance the EDACS system gets reused then.

It's a mystery to me. I searched the 800 mhz band and there were only a couple of control channel for CalTrans and one for RSO Central System. The school police TG will be active in short periods of time, but quiet for days at a time. I'm wondering if maybe San Jacinto College had some RSO HTs since they are in RSO territory and they still use them on the occasion. I have never seen them listed as an official RSO TG anywhere though and it does not seem like traffic from a SRO, as they talk about unlocking buildings, escorts, taking past reports for minor property crimes, etc. SRO's don't do that kind of stuff.

SROs didn't even use their radios very much. Just keep it locked on their station's primary channel and only in case of school emergencies.

EDACS CAN'T be reused. The frequencies have been allocated to Sprint / Nextel and will probably go off the air sometime between now and the completion of the region 5 rebanding.

So how will Sprint use them? There are more 700MHz than 800MHz trunked systems today.

Sprint can use them however the FCC allows for use of this sort of spectral allotment. With contiguous spectrum (as opposed to their current interleaved spectral assignments) they can run high throughput data or divide the channels up into voice slots. The re-banding puts all the Sprint spectrum into one "block" and all the LMR allocations into one "block" as to alleviate the current interference situation and allow for more flexibility in both systems. This GREATLY increases the VALUE of the Sprint spectrum (hence, Sprint's willingness to pay tens of millions to fund rebanding)as it allows LTE or similar formats to be run on it, whereas the current way it is "sliced" between public safety and other LRM channels does not.

The old RSO Central EDACS system is still up and running, to what purpose I have no idea. I haven;t heard any voice traffic in weeks, only occasional data noises. The control signal is loud and clear, like it is next door. Out.

Copy Central system still on the air. What about the Desert and Blythe systems?
