Bat and Bot

This may have been posted before, but what are the Bat and Bot I see online sometimes? I could hvave sworn I also saw Bing but I'm not so sure.

These are search engine bots that index the site. i.e. Googlebot, MSNBot, Baidu, Alexa, etc.

I thought they might be to protect from spam.
